Good 'effective' observation is an absolute necessity on our roads today. A drivers information gathering will take in the movement and actions of others. We look for others speed, indicators and position to give us clues in what they will do next: but we can take our observation of others one step further. Something we do as drivers and human beings is to criticise others mistakes, we our often caught by commenting on the type of driver that surrounds us ie; ' Look at that....in the Audi'.....'that old man should not be on the road'......'she needs to take her test again!'.....'he looks too young to drive!' All these comments are very typical but negative. Better to use our positive thinking methods and observe the driver type and act accordingly....

Tips on Driving Lessons in Cheltenham

Positive Thinking goes a long way!! Cheltenham is a great place to learn to drive. It has a feel good factor that is very important psychologically when driving. Embrace the delight of Cheltenham and create that all important 'positive thinking' approach. I've worked as a driving instructor in many areas of the UK and there are some towns and cities where you just want to leave, let alone drive a car around ..... and believe me that negativity does rub off on the enthusiasm and thus progress of pupils. Enjoy you're driving lessons in Cheltenham, be positive and think yourself lucky to be learning in such a nice and pleasant area.

I must say its great to be back teaching people to drive in Cheltenham. London was great but far too busy! Bristol and Chippenham was cool too but I always missed being in my home town. Cheltenham in spring is so pretty and its a pleasure teaching new drivers how to negotiate the complex road system. To be fair Cheltenham roads our quite easy to handle compared to many towns and cities. I think the hardest driving task a new driver learning in Cheltenham has to deal with is 'Meeting traffic' situations, there are quite a few roads that are not wide enough when cars are parked. Lots of roundabouts too!!! When I returned to Cheltenham It was quite amusing to find some junctions that have had a 'Roundabout makeover' :)

Stolen Driving licence?

Imagine you have your driving test tomorrow and someone steals your wallet or purse and your provisional licence is in there. Well you wont be able to sit your test but if you report it to the police and obtain crime number for the theft and tell the DVLA, then the Driving Standards Agency should reschedule your driving test without charge.
I believe this happened to one of your pupils recently Emma....Let us know if your pupil has a rescheduled driving test without charge.

Useful tool for drivers!!!

Qualified drivers, learner drivers, and even driving instructors maybe neglecting a useful aid to safety on our roads. How much are we using 'Ball' mirrors? Those large circular mirrors opposite junctions with poor visibility. How useful are they? Having coached many qualified drivers, surprisingly, many fail to see these useful aids when emerging from junctions. I call them aids because i do stress they are not totally to be relied on as visibility in them can be difficult...especially if its a cold morning and they are misted up!! However, do use them as they can be useful in deciding to emerge or not. I think Driving Instructors should certainly point these out to their learners....as i do wonder if they all do???

'Get on with it'. Making progress and Driving without hesitation is one of the most important elements in driving on today's roads. Those taking driving tests will have to demonstrate this to the driving examiner if they are to pass their test and obtain their all important driving licence.

Did You Know? Re:Part 3 ADI Test

A potential driving instructor sitting a part 3 test of instructional ability has to remove the L plates on his tuition car on a phase 2, if the examiner plays the role of a FLH (Full licence holder). So if you have L plates that stick onto your car (not magnetic), do not be surprised if the examiner asks you to remove them by peeling them off before you begin phase 2!!

Should driving lessons be carried out in the snow?

In the current bad spell of weather I've been asked this question about carrying out driving lessons in the snow, here's my opinion. The simple answer to this is yes! A new driver should know how to drive in the snow. Just because they will not take a driving test in these conditions it does not mean an instructor should shy away from teaching. Driving is a 'Life skill' and a new driver needs to be aware of this and taught the appropriate skills for all conditions.

However, there is a large 'BUT' here. Driving is about responsibility, and a driver should be aware that severe weather warnings given by the met office should be acted upon. If the highways agency advise drivers not to travel unless unavoidable then this should be adhered to. A driving instructor deciding the roads are too unsafe to travel on, thus learn on, is demonstrating an act of responsibility for safety. This in itself is setting an example to the learner about a drivers responsibility for their safety and other road users.

We cannot all be 'Ice Road Truckers'!!!
